Brock Purdy Sees a New Spark in the 49ers Wide Receiver Room for 2026

The San Francisco 49ers wide receivers have turned the page. After seasons of injuries and contract tension, Brock Purdy now has a group that feels different — and he is not hiding his excitement.

Purdy made the comments during a recent appearance at the Dwight Clark Legacy Series, speaking with Laura Britt. The tone was upbeat, almost relieved.

“Our receiving corps as a whole, we’re really excited about right now,” Purdy said. “Everyone’s healthy and good. We got to keep it going and just keep stacking days and I think we have a really good corps as a whole.”

The names that defined recent years are gone. Deebo Samuel played 2025 with the Washington Commanders and remains a free agent. Brandon Aiyuk was placed on the reserve/left squad list in December and is not expected to play another snap for the franchise. Jauan Jennings signed with the Minnesota Vikings this month.

In their place stand Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, a healthy Ricky Pearsall, second-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Demarcus Robinson.

Evans Brings the Pedigree and the Standard

Mike Evans chose the 49ers over staying in Tampa Bay. The move gives Purdy something he has never had: a proven alpha receiver with six Pro Bowls, eleven 1,000-yard seasons and a Super Bowl ring.

Purdy spoke about the impact with clear respect.

“He’s been awesome. Obviously, just what he’s done in his career, he’s a Hall of Famer, 1,000-yard seasons really year after year his whole career. He’s won a Super Bowl. Just like being around him and his presence and understanding, you know, what it’s going to take to play with him. And just like honestly like the good pressure that it brings like alright, ‘I have a guy that is demanding success and demanding to be great’ and I love that. I want to play with guys like that. Obviously, I’ve played with guys like that, George [Kittle] and Christian [McCaffrey] and all that. But to bring Mike in the fold now and be able to have a big target like he is, but how he sees the game and him breaking down routes that he’s run with Tom [Brady] and Baker Mayfield and I’m like ‘alright like this guy knows ball.’ So, I’m really excited and as we go we’re just going to continue to build chemistry and it’s going to be good.”

Evans does more than stretch the field. He wins contested catches, attacks the red zone and raises the standard in the meeting room. That presence alone changes how defenses scheme against San Francisco.

Stribling and the Young Core Bring Speed and Upside

The second-round selection of De’Zhaun Stribling from Ole Miss adds another layer. Purdy has already noticed the rookie’s movement and acceleration on air routes.

“Stribling’s a guy that same thing like has a lot of raw talent and just throwing routes on air and stuff to him, getting a feel for how he moves and his speed. He’s a guy that, you know, once we obviously get him in the playbook a lot and get reps with each other on the field. I feel like he’s going to be a guy that can come in and make an instant impact. So, Kyle [Shanahan] and Hank [49ers passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Leonard Hankerson] have done a really good job with just developing receivers and stuff. So, to have him in the fold with the great receiving corps that we have right now, it’s just amazing as a quarterback. I’m like, ‘let’s go.’”

Christian Kirk slides into the slot with proven production. Ricky Pearsall returns healthy after his 2024 first-round selection. Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins offer developmental speed. Demarcus Robinson supplies veteran reliability.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan is clearly energized by the mix, according to Purdy. The blend of proven veterans and young talent fits the Shanahan system that has turned good receivers into consistent producers for years.

A Reset Fans Can Feel

For years the 49ers wide receiver room carried frustration — constant injuries, contract disputes and departures. That weight is lifting. Spring practices carry a different energy. Throws look crisp. Routes are run with purpose. The quarterback sounds confident.

Purdy has always praised his teammates. This time the words carry extra weight because the supporting cast finally matches the talent he has shown since his rookie year. Evans supplies the big-play threat and leadership. Stribling and Pearsall bring the explosiveness. Kirk and the young group add depth and versatility.

The 49ers enter 2026 with a receiving corps built for Shanahan’s offense and for Purdy’s growth. The pieces are in place. Now it is about stacking days and turning potential into production.

The Bay Area has waited for this kind of reset at wide receiver. The wait appears to be over.
