Alvin Kamara Turns Heads at Saints OTAs with Unannounced Red-Eye Arrival

Alvin Kamara made the New Orleans Saints do a collective double take Wednesday morning. The veteran running back hopped a red-eye out of Miami, walked straight into the Ochsner Sports Performance Center, and joined his teammates for OTAs without telling a soul he was coming.

One minute the room was going through normal business. The next, Kamara was there, talking his usual brand of noise. Teammates looked up and froze.

“I walked in this morning and I was just talking s— to some dudes and they looked up, like, ‘Man … who the f—?’ They were like, ‘Oh s—, AK!’”

That kind of entrance doesn’t happen often with Kamara. For years he has handled his offseason work privately, away from the voluntary portion of the program. This time he felt the pull and acted on it before he could talk himself out of it.

How the Decision Went Down

Kamara was lying in bed Tuesday night around 8 o’clock when the idea hit. Miami to New Orleans. A 10 p.m. flight. He booked it on the spot.

He called his mom. He was talking to his daughter. She asked what he was doing. He told her he was going to his other job. She clarified — “You gonna play football?” He said yeah. The family exchange captured exactly how rare these appearances have been for him lately.

“I missed New Orleans,” Kamara said later. He wanted to check in, see the guys, get a little work in, and shake up his usual training routine with some different stimulus. So he came.

Coach Kellen Moore Was Just as Surprised

Head coach Kellen Moore didn’t sugarcoat it when reporters asked.

“Obviously a little bit unexpected. It’s good to see him. I just saw him right here at the team meeting we were starting today. We’ll start the process and get to work right away.”

Moore added that Kamara can fit the offensive scheme well and that the running back room can always use more depth. The plan was to ramp him up gradually after he participated in the meeting and some individual work. He was held out of 7-on-7 periods as the staff eased him back in.

The Bigger Picture Hanging Over the Building

Kamara is entering the final year of the two-year extension he signed in October 2024. The Saints restructured the deal earlier this offseason, converting a large chunk of his 2026 base salary into a bonus. Yet here was Kamara on Wednesday, in the building, joking with teammates like nothing had changed.

Kamara’s Message: No Pressure, No Beef

He addressed the uncertainty head-on.

“On my side, I feel no pressure. There’s no beef or bad blood, I don’t think. I’m just doing what I do every year, working. Whatever decisions have got to be made, they’ll be made.”

When asked specifically about taking a pay cut to stay in New Orleans — something he has said in past seasons he would rather avoid by retiring than playing elsewhere — Kamara kept it simple.

“I haven’t had any conversations in regard to that, so I don’t know. I think there’s a time and a place for everything. If that conversation comes up, then I’ll have an answer for you when it comes up.”

The five-time Pro Bowler has spent his entire career with the Saints. He remains the franchise’s all-time leader in rushing yards, yards from scrimmage, and rushing touchdowns. That history still carries weight inside the building and with the fan base.

What This Means Moving Forward

Kamara showing up voluntarily puts the situation squarely in the spotlight at a time when the Saints are trying to figure out their 2026 roster. A committee approach with Etienne’s explosiveness and Kamara’s vision and receiving skills has been discussed in league circles. Whether the organization wants to keep both, move one, or restructure again is the question that now feels more urgent.

Moore has made it clear the team values what Kamara brings. Kamara has made it clear he still feels connected to the place. The next few weeks of OTAs and whatever happens in the building between now and training camp will tell us a lot more than any rumor has so far.
