Jared Verse No. 8 Browns: Insider Clears Up the Jersey Situation With Dillon Gabriel

Cleveland Browns edge rusher Jared Verse wearing No. 8 jersey during June 2026 OTA practice in Berea, Ohio, exploding off the line in brown and orange.
Jared Verse wasted no time making No. 8 his own on the Browns practice field after arriving via the Myles Garrett trade.

The Cleveland Browns pulled off one of the biggest trades in recent memory when they sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for edge rusher Jared Verse plus a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2029 third-round selection.

Verse hit the field for his first organized team activities in Berea wearing the No. 8 he has worn since his Florida State days and through two seasons with the Rams. Right beside him in the same number stood quarterback Dillon Gabriel. The visual sparked plenty of questions around the league and among Browns fans.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo settled the matter Friday morning.

“It is my understanding that you can confidently buy your Jared Verse No. 8 jerseys,” Garafolo said. “They’re waiting on the NFL’s approval… for Dillon Gabriel to change his number.”

Verse gets to keep the digit he wants. Gabriel, for now, keeps wearing it at OTAs and practice until the league signs off on his switch.

The rule is straightforward. Duplicate numbers are allowed during the offseason program and training camp while rosters sit at 90 players. Once the regular season nears and the roster trims, one player has to move. The Browns simply fast-tracked the paperwork so their new pass rusher could stay comfortable in the number that fits his identity.

Verse made his preference clear from the jump. He stepped into Cleveland’s defensive line meetings and onto the grass already wearing 8. The early sessions showed exactly why the Browns targeted him in the deal. That first-step quickness and heavy hands showed up immediately in drills. You could see the fresh energy he brings to a front that lost its longtime leader in Garrett.

The lighthearted side of the story played out in the media scrum. Reporters asked Verse if he had paid Gabriel for the number. He smiled, paused, and playfully acted like he didn’t know which quarterback they meant — mixing up names before realizing the actual situation. It was the kind of easy moment that tells you a new player is already fitting in.

Gabriel, a 2025 third-round pick who started six games as a rookie, has been working behind Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson in the quarterback room. A sixth-rounder, Taylen Green, also sits on the depth chart. For a young signal-caller still carving out his role, changing numbers ranks low on the list of concerns. Some around the league already view him as the third option at best, which only fuels trade speculation if Cleveland decides to add another arm.

For Verse, the number carries real weight. He built his reputation wearing it. Keeping it removes one small distraction during a major transition. The Browns clearly prioritized that comfort when they submitted the request.

Once the NFL approves Gabriel’s change, the situation ends cleanly. Verse will wear No. 8 for the foreseeable future in Cleveland. Gabriel will pick something new. Fans who already ordered the Verse jersey can relax.

The bigger picture remains the youth movement the front office started with this trade. Verse arrived at 25 years old with two productive NFL seasons behind him. He joins a defense looking to reload with younger, ascending pieces while the team stockpiles future draft capital. Early returns at OTAs suggest the fit is already working on the field.

Browns fans have seen plenty of roster turnover in recent years. This particular swap and the quick resolution on the jersey front feel like the start of something more stable on the edge. Verse looks at home already. The number suits him. And that, for now, is all anyone needs to know.
