The Scandal That Forced This Crossroads

Sorsby admitted to placing more than 9,000 wagers totaling at least $90,000 during his college career. Some bets came while he was at Indiana, including wagers on his own team. He entered residential treatment for gambling addiction earlier this year. A temporary court injunction briefly cleared the way for him to play at Texas Tech, but the sides mutually parted ways last week. Now he has applied for the supplemental draft.

The NFL has not held a supplemental draft since 2023. No player has been selected since 2019. The league still must approve Sorsby’s application before any draft can happen this summer.

Riddick’s Warning Hits Different

ESPN analyst Louis Riddick laid it out plainly on Get Up. He did not mince words about what teams are really buying.

“You proceed very slowly and with a whole lot of caution,” Riddick said. “There’s the football character piece, there’s the personal character piece, and then there’s the physical skills piece. Before we even get to the physical skills, we’re talking about personal character here now.”

Riddick continued:

“Locker rooms can tolerate a lot of things… we accept a lot of guys and all their shortcomings into a locker room… because of the one thing that you really do kind of like always gel with players about is this: we’re here to win football games.”

Then he drove the point home about the constant second-guessing that would follow Sorsby onto the field.

“With this young man… you’re gonna be scrutinizing every single thing he does on the football field on game day, every pass he throws… ‘did you try to do that? Are you betting on us? Are we all rowing in the same direction here?’”

Riddick called it exactly what it is — a slippery slope. Teams must be “dead sure” the issue stays in the rearview mirror and never touches game integrity.

Precedent Exists — And It Matters

The last quarterback to enter the supplemental draft was Terrelle Pryor in 2011. He went to the Raiders in the third round after NCAA issues at Ohio State. Pryor later served a suspension. History shows the NFL does not treat college gambling or eligibility violations lightly once a player reaches the pros.

Any team that bids on Sorsby could face the same reality: a potential suspension while the league sorts through the college transgressions. That risk changes the math on what round or compensatory pick a franchise is willing to surrender.

Every Snap Under the Microscope

The bigger issue is not just possible discipline. It is the daily reality inside the building. Every incompletion, every check-down, every sideline conversation gets replayed through the lens of “what if.” Teammates who are grinding for their own livelihoods will wonder if the new quarterback is fully locked in. Coaches will second-guess play calls. Front offices will monitor everything.

That mental tax is real. It can fracture a locker room faster than talent can heal it.

Sorsby has shown arm talent and toughness throughout his college stops at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. The physical tools are not the question. The question is whether a franchise believes the personal growth from treatment is permanent and whether the organization can absorb the external noise and internal doubt that will come with him.

Bottom Line for Interested Teams

Proceed with eyes wide open. The upside of a high-upside quarterback at a discounted supplemental price is obvious. The downside — character questions that never fully disappear and a locker room that stays on edge — carries long-term costs that are harder to quantify.

Riddick summed it up best: you have to be dead sure. Right now, for most teams, that bar remains very high.
